Essential Bedroom Items for Bedridden Patients

When a member of the household spends most of their life in bed, the bedroom is no longer just a place to sleep — it becomes their whole world. Setting the room up properly and completely not only keeps the patient comfortable; it also helps the caregiver work more efficiently and lowers stress all around.

Protea has gathered the checklist that many caregiving families say they can’t do without, so you can set up the room right from day one.

1. The Right Lighting

Good daylight exposure helps maintain the patient’s circadian rhythm and mood. At night, use a night light that guides the caregiver without disturbing the patient’s sleep. Install light switches that are easy to reach both from the bed and from the door, or use motion-sensor lighting.

2. A Bell or Call Signal

The patient must be able to call the caregiver at any time. An inexpensive hand bell is enough, or a one-touch call device. This greatly reduces the patient’s anxiety, because they know someone is watching over them.

3. A Bedside Table at the Right Height

Choose one that adjusts in height so the patient can pick things up without twisting or overreaching. Keep drinking water, tissues, the phone or remote, and daily medications right there.

4. Protea Underpads: Essential from Day One

The National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP), a US-based expert organization, makes it clear that managing moisture and friction is at the heart of pressure injury prevention. Protea underpads, in both sizes — 86 × 86 cm and 86 × 150 cm — support the patient, absorb well, and feature grab handles so a single caregiver can turn the patient alone. They’re easy to change and machine-washable.

5. Protea Positioning Pillows: For Correct Sleep Posture

Protea positioning pillows are made of high-density foam that holds the correct side-lying position, reduces pressure on areas at risk of pressure injuries, and cuts down on how often the caregiver must get up at night to reposition the patient. The Nursing Division, Ministry of Public Health (2020), recommends positioning support devices for every bedridden patient.

6. Skin Care and Cleansing Set

  • PROTEA Rinse-Free Body Wash Concentrate — cleanses without rinsing with water, cutting out steps and avoiding the friction of harsh scrubbing on the skin. Gentle enough for delicate skin.
  • Alcohol-free body lotion
  • 4–6 soft towels, rotated through the wash
  • Medical gloves
  • Diapers or underpads for when they are needed

7. A Spot for Water and Food

A water flask with a straw the patient can reach, cups or plates with non-slip rims, and small snacks. Being able to drink without waiting for the caregiver’s help makes the patient feel more capable and preserves their dignity.

8. Medication Organizers

A pill box divided by day and by time — morning, noon, evening, bedtime — makes it easy to check whether the patient has taken all their medication and reduces the risk of double doses or missed doses.

9. Entertainment and Meaningful Things

A TV or radio, family photos, favorite books or magazines. These aren’t “luxuries” — they protect mental health and help the patient feel they are still part of the world.

Protea believes that a well-set-up room is love made visible. If you don’t have everything today, that’s okay — add one thing at a time. What matters is to start.
